Haus am Bach Black Forest

Haus am Bach Todtnauberg

Place and location

The Haus am Bach, our over 300-year-old Black Forest house, is located on the edge of Todtnauberg in a quiet location at 1,020 meters above sea level, detached on a large, flat meadow area, directly by the stream.

The Stübenbach has its source on the Stübenwasen (1,388 m), Todtnauberg’s local mountain. As Todtnau Waterfall, Germany’s highest natural waterfall, it plunges spectacularly over almost 100 meters in several stages down into the Wiesental valley at the entrance to the village, first flowing into the meadow and later into the Rhine before eventually flowing into the North Sea.

The extensive meadow offers space to lie down, sit and play, while cows or horses graze on the adjacent meadows. A large cherry tree provides shade, small dams can be built by the torrent and in the evening you can sit comfortably by the fire pit by the stream or have a barbecue.

Off to the mountain!

The Haus am Bach is an ideal and inspiring place in unique surroundings for vacations, short escapes from everyday life or creative time-outs at any time of year: plenty of greenery and fresh coolness in summer, sunny days above the sea of fog in autumn, often snow-covered winter wonderland in winter.

Toboggan slope, access to ski lift and slopes, cross-country ski runs and (winter) hiking trails are in the immediate vicinity of the house. The village center (Dörfle) or the heated outdoor pool are about a ten-minute walk away. Whether walks, hikes, ski, snowshoe or bike tours – many activities start right on the doorstep.

The house

Over the past six years, we have ecologically renovated, modernized and converted the Haus am Bach with a great deal of energy and love, mostly on our own. The result is an efficiency house 55, which combines traditional construction methods, natural materials and contemporary architecture. We heat with geothermal energy and draw electricity from our own PV system. The house has three residential units, a guest room, a holiday apartment and a large barn. Even if you can no longer see the venerable age of the house everywhere – some traditional features have remained: the not too generous ceiling heights or the creaky staircase, for example.

Not everything is perfect here, but a lot of things are just the way we like them when we are traveling or visiting other places. We don’t collect seals or stars either … we prefer to leave them in the night sky, where their rays are often particularly abundant here on the mountain.

The dream of living on the mountain in the middle of nature with lots of open space, greenery and sky is shared by five of us from several generations, together with our two cats.

We are delighted to finally be able to welcome holidaymakers and travelers as our guests since December 2023.
